![]() We hope you have a great Memorial Day weekend! While you’re sitting around the table having an eco-friendly picnic, take some time to learn a bit about the history of the holiday. We’ll help you with the biodegradable cutlery and dishes… Memorial Day Facts • Memorial Day actually started with the Civil War. It was a response to the loss of life during that war. • General Logan made Memorial Day Official. He issued General Orders No. 11 which set aside May 30, 1868 as a day of memorial for those that died during the Civil War. • It was first known as Decoration Day. This came from the practice of decorating graves with flowers. Memorial Day became the official name in 1967. It has also since expanded to include those who died in all the country’s wars. • There’s still a “grey” Memorial Day. Some Southern states set aside a day for remembering the Confederate dead, as well. There’s no one unified date for this, however. • Memorial Day is a solemn event at its core—but don’t feel guilty about having a barbeque, either! If you’re good to the Earth, then you’re showing some respect. Have a happy Memorial Day, everyone!

Here are a few ways that you can have an environmentally friendly Memorial Day picnic. Enjoy! 1. Try to stay local. Just drive less, walk, bike, or take public transportation. You’ll save gas and reduce pollutants. You’ll even get some exercise! 2. Use some reusables! Find napkins, containers, and utensils that you can use over again. If you do this often enough, you’ll decrease your use of new resources—and save money in the long run. 3. Recycle. This is an obvious thing, but so many people overlook it. 4. Choose fresh, local, and organic foods. When you support local farms, you’re taking care of the environment. It takes 9 pounds of wheat to produce 1 pound of meat, so eating veggies is so much better for the environment. 5. Leave it neater than you found it. When you’re picnicking in a public area, you might find some garbage left behind. Pick it up and leave the area neater than it was when you got there! 6. Take the time to enjoy the weather and learn a little bit about clouds. Watching the sky can really put Mother Earth in perspective. You can find some great biodegradable goods here at Whole Earth Packaging to help you have an awesome Memorial Day picnic.

![]() We talked about Mother Earth for quite some time around Earth Day and Mother’s Day. But what about dads? They bring us a ton of inspiration, motivation, and humor. We can’t just forget about them. So we scoured the internet (and asked a few of our friends) to find some of the best and funniest “dad quotes.” Stuff my Dad Says from Whole Earth Packaging • “I can’t see in the dark with all the lights!” • “Are you on the computer? Can you help me set up one of those face spaces?” • “Can I have a fork and knife? Yes, it’s for the sushi. Why? Is that not cool?” • “What’s a tankini?” What a great dad! One of our friends had a daughter going off to college. She was taking the old family car, so her dad loaded the trunk with soft-drink bottles filled with oil, coolant, and transmission fluid. One day, her car overheated while she was away. She hadn’t listened to her dad when he explained what to do. But once she opened the hood, she saw that her dad knew her all too well. The oil cap was labeled “Dr. Pepper,” the transmission stick was labeled “Coke,” and the empty coolant container was labeled “Diet Pepsi.” The things dads will do! So what does your dad do that makes him so special?
