It’s summertime and we’re all basking in the joy of the sun and the surf. But the school year is just around the corner. Have you ever really thought about the difficult job that you school janitor has once those bells start ringing? School janitors perform a variety of tasks in order to keep the school in orderly and working condition. There isn’t any formal training for these workers—they get their training on the job. If you’re in charge of a school, consider equipping your janitors with eco-friendly cleaning supplies such as mops, brushes, brooms, and cleaning solution. It’s not an easy job, but it doesn’t have to be tough on the environment.

School janitors keep the place clean by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and waxing the floors. They vacuum and shampoo the carpets, take out the trash, wash windows, walls, and ceilings. With the help of biodegradable cleaning supplies, janitors even take care of the bathrooms and wash fixtures. Janitorial duties extend to the outside, too. They mow lawns, remove snow, and maintain the grounds.

When you go back to school this fall, remember to thank everyone involved in making the environment pleasant. Your teachers are there to make sure you learn what you need to learn; but the janitor is there to make sure you can do so in a clean environment. Choose your eco-friendly janitorial supplies from Whole Earth Packaging.

The heat wave sweeping the nation has inspired us here at Whole Earth Packaging. We realize that being outside isn’t so easy right now… and neither is being inside! So how do you stay cool? Well, here are some tips that work for us. Remember, you don’t have to sit in air conditioning to stay cool. You can make yourself more comfortable rather easily.

In order to stay cool in the summer months, you can start out by cooling your home. How do you do that the eco-friendly way without using too much electricity? Set your air conditioner (if you have one) on LOW and turn on the ceiling fans. Open windows around the house to create a cross breeze. With the fans blowing and the cross breeze moving, your home will stay nice and cool without a high bill (or excess energy!) for air conditioning.
When you’re outside, wear light clothing, a big hat, and sunglasses. The hat will shield your head from the sun and create shade over your face and shoulders. The sunglasses help to alleviate glare from the sun. And light clothing (in light colors, too) will deflect the sun and keep you cooler.
You can also keep cool in an eco-friendly way by participating in some water sports. Do aqua-aerobics, swim laps, or just splash around in a lake! Drink lots of water, and you’ll stay cooler naturally, too.

How are you beating the heat during this heat wave?

It seems like there are so many people expecting little ones this time of year! If you have a friend or loved one with a baby on the way, you want to make sure they get the very best. After all, buying eco-friendly baby gifts is more than just the “hip” thing to do. When a new person comes into the world, you can help to make it a better place by giving them something natural. You’re doing your part with the eco-friendly and biodegradable supplies here at Whole Earth Packaging. So why not start the little one out on the right foot?

Everything that touches a baby’s skin should be soft, clean, and pure—so give the baby clothing, towels, and bedding that’s made of 100% organic cotton or wool. There are many specialty stores out there that handle pesticide-free natural textiles. Even better, many department stores have natural selections in their baby boutiques or online catalogs. Organic soaps, detergents, and natural bleaches are ideal to keep the baby’s clothing clean and fresh, too. Know how to knit or crochet? Recycle yarn or use yarn that’s made from organic cotton or wool.

Wood toys are great for the earth, too. They’re sturdy, beautiful, and they might last long enough for the baby’s own children! Look for wooden toys that are solid, splinter free, and made of sustainable wood.

Do you have some great eco-friendly baby ideas? We’d love to hear them.

Ponyo – This movie is based on The Little Mermaid. It’s about the daughter of a sea goddess and an alchemist who begins her life as a fish-girl. She’s found washed ashore by a five-year-old boy who lives by the sea. It reminds everyone how valuable the world’s creatures are.
