Have you ever wondered what type of herb you would use to calm a belly ache, or which herb you can use as tea? From motherwort herb to peppermint leaf, there are a variety of ways to use herbs.

Mullein Leaf:

  • Long ago, the Greeks and the Romans used the stem of mullein as a lamp or torch, which was said to ward off evil spirits and witches. Today, this herb is commonly used to make tea, and in a mixture of other herbs to treat a cough.

Peppermint Leaf:

  • People have been using peppermint in medicine for about ten thousand years! Today, this herb is used as tea, as ice cream flavoring, and chewing gum flavoring. Peppermint leaf enhances your memory, and may calm a stomach ache.

Motherwort Herb:

  • The Greeks used this herb to calm the anxieties of pregnant women, while in Europe it was once used to treat cattle diseases. Today, motherwort is used to lower the level of fat in the blood, improve fertility, treat postpartum depression, and menopause.

Spearmint Leaf:

  • If you need to fight indigestion, reduce a fever, relieve stress, increase mental alertness, or brighten your mood, spearmint leaf is the herb for you. Like Peppermint leaf, spearmint leaf is also used to flavor gum, and as tea.

Recycling is one of the best ways to live an environmentally friendly lifestyle. During our last blog post we talked about how to recycle items such as glass jars, fire extinguishers, printer cartridges and other items. This blog post will teach you how to recycle things like recreational equipment, notebooks, tin foil and other household products.

Recreation / Sports Equipment – Donate gently used sports equipment to your local good will store, so others can find enjoyment out of your used sports equipment.

Rugs – Check with your local recycling center to see if they recycle cotton and wool rugs. If they don’t recycle rugs, donate your gently used rugs to your local good will store.

Shopping Bags – Many stores have a drop off to collect plastic shopping bags for recycling purposes. Paper shopping bags can be recycled with the rest of your paper recycling.

Smoke Detectors – Check with your town’s recycling center to see if they accept old or broke smoke detectors.

Soap Dispensers (Plastic) – Plastic soap dispensers can be recycled with the rest of your plastic recyclables.

Spiral Notebooks – Recycle spiral notebooks along with the rest of your paper recycling

Tin Foil – After rinsing off used tin foil, recycle it with your cans.

Tissue Boxes – Recycle tissue boxes with the rest of your cardboard recycling.

Window Envelopes – You can recycle envelopes with plastic windows just as you would other paper recycling.

Now that you know how to recycle many common household items you can start saving our environment by implementing a recycling program in your home. Do you have a recycling question? Ask us with a comment, and we’ll help you with all your recycling questions!

Last week, we talked about how to recycle different types of products, such as eyeglasses, books, and computers. This week we’ll teach you how to recycle some other common household items, so you can live an eco-friendly lifestyle.

Fire Extinguishers – If you need to recycle a dry-chemical fire extinguisher, make sure there’s no pressure left in the canister, remove the head from the top of the canister and recycle the extinguisher with the rest of your metal recyclables. Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are refillable, so there’s no need to worry about recycling them.

Hangers – Donate your plastic hangers to a used clothing or goodwill store. Wire hangers can be recycled with the rest of your metal recyclables. Just make sure you remove any cardboard before recycling.

Glass Jars – Glass jars can be recycled as long as your municipality collects glass recyclables.

iPods – If you take your old iPod to an Apple Store they’ll give you ten percent off a new Apple iPod.

Mattresses / Box Springs – Many cities and municipalities recycle mattresses and box springs since they’re made of materials like wire, paper and cloth. Check with your city to see if they collect mattresses and box springs.

Metal Silverware – Recycle metal silverware like you would any other type of scrap metal.

Packing Peanuts – Many packaging companies collect and reuse these non-recyclable packaging accessories.

Pizza Boxes – Recycle your empty pizza boxes along with your corrugated cardboard. Just make sure you remove all food from the boxes before recycling.

Post-its – Recycle your reminders with the rest of your paper recyclables.

Printer-ink Cartridges – Many retail stores recycle your old printer cartridges. Some may even give you a percentage off your next printer-ink cartridge purchase!

At Whole Earth Packaging, we love the Earth, which is why we have many different environmentally friendly products that are perfect for homes and businesses! Check out next week’s blog when we’ll finish discussing how to recycle certain household products.

From a young age, we’re all taught about recycling. We already know that recycling saves energy, prevents pollution, conserves natural resources, reduces the need for landfills and helps to sustain the environment for future generations, but do you know what types of materials are able to be recycled and how to go about recycling them? It’s time we all learned the right way to recycle.

Aerosol Cans – Make sure that the can is completely empty, pull off the plastic cap and recycle aerosol cans as you would other types of cans.

Aluminum Cans – Rinse out and empty the entire product from the can before recycling, remove any labels, and place cans curbside for municipal recycling pickup. Check with your local municipality to learn when recycling pickup is in your town.

Batteries – Many retail stores have drop off containers for old batteries. You can prevent the need to dispose of old batteries by investing in rechargeable batteries.

Books – Recycle paperback books as you would regular paper, but you can only recycle the paper from hard cover books.

Cell Phones – There are many different cell phone collecting organizations and programs across the United States.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs) – Check with a local retail store to locate a drop-off box for recycling CFL light bulbs.

Computers – Donate your old computer to an organization or charity, or check with the manufacturer to see if they have a recycling program.

Crayons – Using muffin tins, bake old broken crayons in the oven to create new colorful crayons.

Eyeglasses – Metal eyeglass frames can be recycled along with your scrap metal. Another eyeglass recycling option is donating your used eyeglasses. Check with a local doctor’s office to see if they have or know of a drop off.

We all have a vested interested in saving the environment. You can learn more about being eco-friendly and recycling, and find many environmentally friendly products at WholeEarthPackaging.com. Check back with us next week when we discuss ways to recycle other materials and products.
