It feels like it took forever, but summer is finally here!
Not only does summer offer a wide variety of fun outdoor activities, such as
swimming and picnicking, but it’s the perfect time of year to make some
environmentally friendly changes in your life. Here are some of our best

Over the past few weeks we’ve taken you through eco-friendly
terms beginning with the letters A through V, and this final post in the series
will define environmentally friendly terms beginning with the letters W though
Z.
Waste – Another
name for garbage or trash.
Waste Electrical and
Electronic Equipment (WEEE) – Any broken or unwanted electronic equipment,
such as computers or cell phones.
Waste-to-Energy –
The burning of waste in order to generate steam, heat or electricity.
Waste Site – A
dumping ground for garbage or trash.
Waste Stream –
The overall waste disposal cycle for a specified population.
Waterborne
Contaminants – Unhealthy and sometimes dangerous microorganisms found in
tap water.
Water Conservation
– the process of reducing the amount of water used and recycling waste water
for cleaning, manufacturing and agricultural purposes.
Water Quality –
The level of purity or safety of drinking water
Water Quality Testing
– Monitoring water for contaminants to make sure the water is safe to drink,
and for swimming and wildlife.
Watershed – An
area where water flows freely into a lake, reservoir, stream or river.
Well – A hole
that is dug or drilled and used to get water from the earth.
Wetland – Marshes
or swamps that are saturated with water.
Wilderness –
Undisturbed land that remains in the wild with little or no traces of human
activity.
Wind Power –
Energy obtained from the wind.
Wind Turbine – A
large, rotating machine that converts wind energy into mechanical energy.
Zoning – The act
of partitioning land for different uses in cities, boroughs, or townships.

So far, in our Environmentally Friendly Terms blog post
series we’ve covered topics and defined words, such as air pollution, biodegradable materials ,
recycling and other important eco-friendly terms. This post will discuss
environmentally friendly terms beginning with the letters T through V.
Thermal Energy –
Energy that is generated and measured by any kind of heat.
Thermonuclear –
High heat that is obtained from a fission explosion, causing fusion of light
nuclei.
Threatened Species
– A species will likely become endangered in the foreseeable future.
Toxic – Poisonous
Toxic Emissions –
Poisonous chemicals and gases that are released into the air, water or land.
Toxic Sites – A
piece of land that is contaminated with toxic pollution and is usually
unsuitable for human inhabitants.
Traffic Calming –
Creating streets that reduce the speed of vehicles and enhance walking and
bicycling.
Trash – Waste
that can not be recycled and reused.
Trip Reduction –
Reducing the number of trips by vehicle, by sharing rides or consolidating
trips.
Upcyclying –
Recycling in a way that allows the new products that are made from recycled
material to be of a higher economic value.
Vermicomposting –
A process where worms feed on decomposing materials in a controlled
environment, producing nutrient-rich soil.
Volatile Organic
Compounds (VOCs) – Compounds that evaporate from housekeeping, maintenance
and building products that are made with organic chemicals.
There’s only a few more environmentally friendly terms and
posts left in this series. We hope you’ve been learning a lot about how to be environmentally
