Learning how to be environmentally friendly can be fun, especially when you’re learning with Whole Earth Packaging! This week, we’ll discuss eco-friendly terms O through R.

Offsetting – Reducing carbon emissions by counteracting an action that isn’t environmentally friendly with an action that is.

Oil – A fossil fuel that is used to generate materials, such as plastic.

Organic – The growth of vegetables and other plants without using pesticides and fertilizer.

Ozone Layer – The uppermost layer of the atmosphere located approximately 8 to 30 miles above the earth.

Particulate – Small particles of dust, soot, pollen, dander, mold, mildew, mineral fibers, etc. that are small enough to be suspended in the air and, at times inhaled.

Photovoltaic Panels – Solar panels that convert sunlight into electricity, producing power

Plastic – A man-made synthetic-based product that is durable, yet flexible.

Pre-consumer Recycled Content – Material that has been recovered from the manufacturing waste stream before it has been used for its full life expectancy.

Post Consumer Waste – Waste that is collected after a consumer throws it away.

Recyclable – A term used to describe products or materials that are capable of being recycled.

Reclaimed – Products that are made of materials that have been recycled or thrown away

Recycled Content – The percentage of the total weight of recycled materials in one product

Recycling – Collecting, sorting and reprocessing old materials into usable raw materials.

Reduce – The act of not using or buying products, so that there is less waste, recycling and reusing.

Renewable – A natural resource that is replaced by a natural process at a rate which is equal to or greater than the rate of its consumption by humans.

Renewable Energy – Alternative energy sources, such as solar power.

Renewable Resources – Natural materials that can be regenerated, such as wind, sunlight, and trees

Reuse – A product that can be reused before it’s recycled or thrown away.
