Today we honor our veterans. We’d like to send a sincere “thank you” out to those that served our country. And, while we’re at it, we’d like to point out that the military is starting to join the eco-friendly movement, too. Every branch of the military is focusing on some type of energy efficiency—as well as moving toward renewable energy. Just in 2010, the government budgeted $2.7 billion to improve energy efficiency in the military.

We got word that in a recent press conference, the Assistant Secretary of the Navy noted that “by 2020, 50 percent of the Navy’s total energy consumption will come from alternative sources.” He also noted that “by 2015, the Navy will reduce petroleum use in vehicles by 50 percent.” Let’s put this in perspective. Back in 1999, the USS Constellation burned 264 gallons of diesel PER SECOND. For that reason, the Navy uses nuclear-powered aircraft carriers now.

Another report says that the Army has reduced its water usage by 31 percent and its energy use by 10.4 percent since 2004. The Air Force recently finished a 140-acre solar site near Las Vegas. They’ve also been testing aircrafts to use a blend of synthetic fuels. In fact, the Marines are even going green! They plan to cut their energy consumption in half by 2025.

We salute our veterans, and we salute the military for keeping an eye on the environment!
