![]() We’re going to continue our series about Earth Day. Mark your calendars for April 22nd! Did you know that children played a monumental role in getting Earth Day started? Senator Gaylord Nelson thought of creating a special day to celebrate the planet—largely because he worried about its fate. He talked to members of Congress and the president about pollution and other environmental issues. President Kennedy actually began visiting parts of the country to talk about these problems. Senator Nelson still didn’t think enough was being done. He, along with some others, created Earth Day as a way to teach people about the importance of improving our environment. He wrote to various colleges, and posted an article in “Sholastic” magazine about Earth Day. He hoped that children would join in his efforts. The first Earth Day was April 22, 1970. Today, Earth Day is celebrated across the world—not just in the US. Every year on April 22, millions of people get together to promote sustainable activities. You can contribute to this all year long by choosing biodegradable and compostable products from Whole Earth Packaging. by: Whole Earth Packaging |
